The Band Toto Asia

Line-up

The band’s third album, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet arrangement of previous albums. It was a more powerful, constant effort with an edge that was stronger than Hydra. The more edgy sound of the album reflected the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball’s greater virtuosity on drums, and a more mature, confident vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich’s keyboard playing was also sharper, more complex and less akin to previous recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album was released shortly after, and the band embarked on an extensive world tour to promote it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to find songs that hadn’t been recorded prior to. The album was released in 2001 as a double album titled Then and Now. It was the first album in the history of the band that did not include one single track with the word “A” in its title and it included one previously not released track, “Kari-Anne”.

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group’s fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and vocalist Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis condition that limited his singing abilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar’s drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia, met in England early in 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be revived. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was a member of Yes at the time) was later referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
